Off to Market

Friday 16 March 2007, 1.30pm - 5.30pm, Curzon Street Station, Digbeth, Birmingham B4 7XG

Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller, Photographer’s Gallery Prize winner Idris Khan, photographer and Creative Director of Rhubarb-Rhubarb, Rhonda Wilson MBE, and gallerist and co-founder of Zoo art fair David Risley will share their thoughts and knowledge about the art market, discussing the relationships between artists, galleries, fairs and collectors. The seminar is designed particularly, but not exclusively, for artists from the West Midlands, and is chaired by editor and writer Matt Price.

Topics include:

  • What is the fine art market, how does it work and where does it live?
  • How do artists find the right galleries and galleries the right artists? What are the issues involved in representing artists and being represented by a gallery? How can more artists from the West Midlands get into the gallery system?
  • Miami, Frieze, Basel, the Armory – what’s all the fuss about? Are the markets really expanding? What role are the young art fairs playing? Why aren’t there any galleries from the West Midlands at any of the major international fairs?
  • Where are the collectors? Who’s buying art today and why? What are they buying? How can more people be encouraged to start collecting in the West Midlands?

The day will include a walking tour of the Art Market and NAB associated exhibitions including Ariston at Moor Street Station, LTD Edition at The Bond and Ignite at MADE.

Collecting Fever

Collecting is booming internationally and playing ever more prominent roles in both the art industry and market. This seminar considers private, corporate and public contemporary art collections, and specifically, how individuals and businesses in the West Midlands can start or develop their own. Arts Council West Midlands Visual Arts Officer Elizabeth Hawley will discuss Arts Council policy and the benefits of collecting to the region, while Ben Eastop and Robert Lee introduce The Collective, an expanding national network for new collectors. They will be joined by photographer and Creative Director of Rhubarb-Rhubarb, Rhonda Wilson MBE, and, on behalf of Nottingham's artist-led gallery MOOT, curator and artist Candice Jacobs. Chaired by editor and writer Matt Price.

Topics include:

  • Charles Saatchi, the Rubells, Ingvild Goetz, the Essls, Anita Zabludowicz, Dakis Joannou – what makes a great collector?
  • Why start a collection of contemporary art? How much money do you need to spend? How do you choose which galleries to buy from? How much work is involved in running a collection?
  • Deutsche Bank, BMW, Ernst & Young, UBS, JP Morgan Chase, Monsoon – how do corporate collections compare with public and private collections? What are the benefits of corporate collections?
  • Why collecting needs to develop in the West Midlands, and what makes this a good time to do so.

The day will include a walking tour of the Art Market and NAB associated exhibitions including Ariston at Moor Street Station, LTD Edition at The Bond and Ignite at MADE.

A buffet lunch will be provided. The Collective will be hosting an informal drinks reception at Art Market from 6pm.
